Home craft is a great way to decorate your home, and can also give you the perfect gifts for Christmas time, birthdays, or any time you want to share something special with someone you love. Mason jar candles are one of the easiest home craft projects, and you’ll also be able to express yourself through color, aroma, and your own individual decorating.
Home Made Candles Are Simple and Fun
Making candles is easy, and the ingredients are readily available from home and craft stores. Here’s what you will need.
A measuring cup, (oven safe glass, 1quart).
Long nose tweezers or pliers.
Wax (Soy based)
Soy wax is simple because it melts easily in the microwave, so place your wax in your measuring cup, and microwave it for around 3 – 5 minutes depending on the power of your microwave. Watch for the wax to melt so you’ll know when it’s ready to be removed. If the wax has melted down and the measuring cup is not near to the filling line, add more wax, and microwave again until the cup is full to the 1quart measure.
You’re going to need to bake the wax for the next step. While the mixture is still hot, carefully add color and essential oil of your choice. Scents like vanilla, jasmine, or even citrus can make delicious smelling candles, and with the color you can go wherever your creativity takes you. After adding the color and oil, place the glass measuring cup in to an oven preheated to 180°F, before turning it down to the lowest setting (usually the warmer setting) and leaving the mixture for 10 minutes. This will allow the scent and color to blend completely with the wax.
Now that your mixture is ready, you can begin to set it in your mason jars. Use your tweezers or pliers to hold the wick, and carefully pour in the wax mixture. You can precut the wick after measuring the mason jars, or use a long thread and cut it after you fill each jar. When you’ve filled your jars, place them all in the oven for a further 10 minutes, before removing them and allowing them to cool.
Complete the Craft Look With a Chalkboard Label
When the jars have cooled off, you can further decorate them to complete the presentation. Chalkboard labels are the perfect way to label your homemade designer candles, and you can make use of these reusable labels to name the fragrance, write a short poem, inspirational quote, or even a mantra. Your chalkboard label will complete the boutique, home craft look of your mason jar candles, and with some creative labelling you will have the perfect home decorations, or gifts for friends and family.
